Fred Thompson Envisions ‘New Coalition’

A day after pitching his conservative credentials down South, likely presidential hopeful Fred Thompson took a broader approach Thursday in his first trip to New Hampshire.

The actor and former Tennessee senator said the United States will again become a “beacon of inspiration” to the rest of the world if it returns to the core principles on which it was founded.

“I think we can form a new coalition of Republicans and independents and some Democrats,” he said at a fundraiser for Republican state senators.

Democrats spooked by rise of ‘new Reagan’

Telegraph.co.uk The Democratic party is so alarmed by the prospect of competing against Fred Thompson, a Republican who portrays himself as a successor to Ronald Reagan, that it is advising campaigners how to attack the former actor and Tennessee senator.

Mr Thompson is not expected to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination until next month, but Democratic strategists fear the combination of his conservatism, southern charm and populist style could make him a hard man to beat in 2008. Some polls have already placed him in the top two Republicans, underlining the weakness of his rivals. ::::More::::

Passing the Torch: Who’s the Next Gipper?

The first 2008 presidential primary is still about seven months away. But there’s a fierce race on in Republican circles to see who can lay claim to being the next great conservative leader. That’s where Ronald Reagan enters the picture…

In every presidential contest people always seem to ask the same questions: Who can get the most votes? Who can raise the most cash? Who can kiss the most babies? But for the 2008 Republican race, the burning question is – who can invoke Reagan’s name the most?

Another sign of his intentions? Fred Thompson is raising money

By: Mark Memmott and Jill Lawrence USATODAY
fred08.png Former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson hasn’t formally announced he’ll run for the Republican presidential nomination — but today he did begin raising money for a prospective bid, USA TODAY Washington bureau chief Susan Page writes. She continues:In a conference call with about 100 people — many of whom have urged him to jump in the race — Thompson asked for their help in raising funds for a testing-the-waters committee, which is likely to be formed next week. That money could be used for a campaign when and if he’s ready to run.

“I’m not saying anything against any of the candidates, but I think he can fill the vacuum that has not been filled yet on the Republican side,” Mack Mattingly, a former U.S. senator from Georgia who was on the call, says of Thompson. He predicts the actor and former senator “will be just like a magnet” who can attract conservative Democrats and Republicans.

Carl Ricker, a Republican fundraiser and real estate developer from Asheville, N.C., who was also in on the call, says he has delayed giving to other presidential candidates. “I guess there are people out there I could live with,” he says, “but there’s not anyone who made me smile and feel warm inside like Fred does.”

Even before launching a campaign, Thompson finished third in the latest USA TODAY/Gallup Poll, at 13% support among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. In the survey, taken May 4-6, former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani led with 34%; Arizona Sen. John McCain was second at 20%. No other GOP candidate got above 10%.

Dobson says he will not back Giuliani in 2008

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Religious conservative leader James Dobson said on Thursday he would not vote for 2008 Republican presidential contender Rudolph Giuliani under any circumstances because of his support for abortion rights and his three marriages. Dobson, head of the influential Colorado-based group Focus on the Family, said Giuliani was not suited for the White House. Dobson said he would be willing to sit out the November 2008 election if Giuliani is the Republican presidential nominee. “I cannot, and will not, vote for Rudy Giuliani in 2008,” Dobson wrote in a commentary posted online at the Web site worldnetdaily.com. Given a choice between Giuliani and the Democratic nominee, he said, “I will either cast my ballot for an also-ran — or if worse comes to worst — not vote in a presidential election for the first time in my adult life.”

I would have to agree with Dobson on Giuliani. Not necessarily over every issue. But over the fact that he in my opinion is not the right man for the job. I do how ever have a favorite. And it shouldn’t really be a secret at this point. Fred Thompson. There is a man who is fit to lead this country. Not just against terrorist or any threat near – far. No Fread is that kind of conservative we have been needing since Reagan. Bush was the man at start. But somewhere along the way he revealed his softer under belly to the democrats. You could say Bush blew all chances for respect every time he spoke. Fred Thompson…. 08
Anybody else is likely another let down.

Christian conservatives pledge support for ‘08 Thompson bid

Washington Times Several leading Christian conservatives say they will rally to former Sen. Fred Thompson, who they expect to announce “in a matter of weeks” that he will seek the Republican nomination for president next year.
“It’s not ‘if’ but ‘when,’ he will announce,” one Protestant evangelical leader says of the behind-the-scenes maneuvering for position in the 2008 race.
A prominent Roman Catholic social conservative says the three Republicans who have raised the most money and have led the polls — former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, Arizona Sen. John McCain and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney — fall short of social conservatives’ expectations, but Mr. Thompson doesn’t. “He’s right on the issues … He’s better than all of the above.”
Both the Protestant and Catholic activist, like other Christian conservatives, spoke to The Times on the condition of anonymity.
