US Textbooks: Muslims Discovered America

Teaching, among other things, that Jesus was a “Palestinian,” the state of Israel never existed, and that the Muslims discovered America before Columbus. At this rate, perhaps even Saudi grade-school textbooks, complete with jihadi and dhimmi declarations, will come to instruct American school-children.

CBNNews.com – Several recent studies have shown that American students are alarmingly ignorant about U.S. history and world events.

Experts have contributed the problem to everything from failing schools to substandard teachers.

But what about content?

For instance, did you know that Muslims discovered America? Or that Jerusalem is an Arab city? That’s just some of the “history” that students in America’s K-12 classrooms have been taught in recent years–with the help of taxpayer money.

A new report by the non-profit Institute for Jewish and Community Research finds that American high school and elementary textbooks contain countless inaccuracies about Christianity, Judaism, Israel and the Middle East.

The Institute examined 28 of the most widely-used history, geography and social studies textbooks in America. It found at least 500 errors.

One book ignored the Jewish roots of Christianity, saying the faith was founded by a “young Palestinian” named Jesus.

Another stated as fact that the Koran was revealed to Mohammed from God.

Yet another said ancient Jewish civilization contributed “very little” to to the arts and sciences.

Textbooks like these are used by millions of schoolchildren in all 50 states.[...]

Harvard is one of 18 universities that receives government funding under Title VI of the Higher Education Act of 1965. To qualify for that funding, the universities are required to conduct outreach to K-12 teachers, helping them to shape lessons for schoolchildren. Elementary and secondary teachers have taken full advantage of the arrangement: after all, they believe they’re getting expert insight on Islam and the Middle East from distinguished university scholars.

“You have a lot of politically naive teachers–well intentioned teachers who do want their students to learn more about Islamic history,” says Stotsky. “It has not been well covered in most history courses they’ve ever taken, so they do genuinely want to learn more for themselves and teach their students more.”

In some cases they may be getting more than they bargained for: the Saudi government has donated millions of dollars to Middle East Centers at universities that receive Title VI funding.

The Harvard Middle Eastern Studies Center–whose recommendations to the Massachusetts Board originally drew Stosky’s concern–is one of them. As CBN News reported earlier this year, the Harvard Center received a $20 million donation from Saudi Prince Alwaleed bin Talal in 2005. Georgetown University–another title VI recipient–also received $ 20 million from the Prince that same year.

It’s through these Title VI university centers–all of them government-sanctioned and taxpayer supported–that Saudi-funded materials find their way into K-12 classrooms.

“Saudi donations to American universities should be seen in a much larger picture of Saudi promotion of a Saudi point of view,” said Daniel Pipes, Director of the Middle East Forum in Philadelphia. “Whether it be Islamic or political, the Saudis have a point of view. And they have been very clever and very generous over the decades to promote that point of view.”

Call for suicide attacks issued at Pakistani mosque

ISLAMABAD – Radical Islamists inside a mosque surrounded by Pakistani security forces issued a call over a loudspeaker on Tuesday for their followers to begin suicide bomb attacks.

Gunfire had erupted earlier following clashes between paramilitary troops and students at Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, in the capital Islamabad. One trooper was killed and two students died later from wounds.

“We had asked to stop the firing 10 minutes ago, but as the firing continues we are calling for suicide attacks,” said the message broadcast from inside the mosque’s compound.

Gingrich on Church and State, Or, As Always, Newt Gingrich Is The Only Political Figure Who Says Anything Worth Thinking About

He saw that as the Bible requires Christians to bear witness to the Truth, so too does the Declaration of Independence require Americans to bear witness to certain self-evident truths.

To be sure, the Truth of the Bible is not identical with the truths of the Declaration. But the two orders of truth do overlap, and where they overlap, they powerfully reinforce each other. Indeed, the Declaration assumes many of the central teachings of the Bible.

When our Declaration asserts “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”, it makes some key assumptions.

It assumes that God is sovereign over the universe.

It assumes that God created man.

Strictly speaking, I don’t think Gingrich is quite right here. Jefferson uses the phrase “Nature’s God” elsewhere precisely to distance these “inalienable rights” from “God” proper. The American Constitution is a very secular document, and the religious beliefs of its Framers – Deists for the most part – are anathema to Protestants, Catholics, Jews and Muslims alike.

I’m not saying this to say Newt is lying, or that America is meant to destroy Christianity or anything like that. I just don’t want to simplify our history for you, and let you think there are easy answers. In fact, what makes the rest of Gingrich’s speech so compelling is that he does not allow for easy answers about the relationship of religion and the state:

The Founders considered religion a great benefit to society. They had a very straightforward belief that the purpose of government was the protection of liberty, and that the maintenance of liberty inevitably required virtue among its citizens. The “pursuit of Happiness” was actually a Scottish enlightenment phrase meaning virtue and wisdom.

And if virtue was to survive in the American experiment, it would require “true religion”, which was that religion which cultivates the virtues necessary to the protection of liberty.

Implicit within this vision of the Founding Fathers is a pluralistic sensibility. Any true religion would be therefore deserving of the respect of the government, which would include the freedom to express in public the moral principles of such a true religion.

Constitutional self-government requires personal self-government; the more the government can rely on its citizens, the less it will need to govern them because they will govern themselves.

This belief that religion was an indispensable support of republican government was to be found throughout the founding generation.

Its strongest and clearest statement is to be found in George Washington’s “Farewell Address”. He said:

Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.

It is this kind of subtlety that no candidate on the Democratic or Republican side can match right now. Gingrich moves from almost saying “the Christian God underlies the Declaration of Independence” to “virtue and wisdom” were hallmarks of the Scottish enlightenment that informed how the Founders thought about religion. The message is clear for those who think atheism is a good thing: if America is atheist, there will be no virtue in civic life. None whatsoever. In fact, the lack of virtue from religion will mean the death of the intellect.

But religion conceived rightly – “true religion” – ironically leads to an acceptance of all religions by those who can govern themselves. In other words, the test of a true religion is how the practitioners of it behave: if they suicide bomb and raise money for terrorists in order to throw another nation “into the sea,” as they may say, that sort of thing is probably not going to come under “true religion.” And Gingrich beautifully takes apart the Wahhabi ideology as not treating anyone as equal, and thus not respecting the fundamental tenet of the Declaration.

I can’t begin to express to you how good this rhetoric is. In an address meant for a fundamentalist Christian audience, Gingrich has managed to talk to those who might be more secularly inclined to see the good religion has, as the tolerance an atheist might demand can only come from religion. Gingrich shows how the American order has a nice little system for showing how religion is judged objectively by the government – it must promote “civic virtue” – and thus shows how PC nonsense is a break from the Founding, even if one conceives of the Founding as secular. For political correctness is identity politics without necessitating virtue; it is tolerance used to justify intolerance. He also brings back one of my favorite themes, that of equality, and shows that it is about treating people with dignity, and that is the fundamental flaw of the brand of Islamism we are fighting, as well as the terrorists. Dignity for them only comes through violence.

Which brings us to how the modern secular American order and the Biblical order agree: both seek peace, and realize that peace has a lot to do with justice, and justice involves standing up for each other. I can’t think of a more positive or beautiful way of rendering why our religious diversity is important, and I am really stunned this speech is not getting more attention.

Iran restricts Al-Jazeera network

Iran’s parliament has banned Al-Jazeera television reporters from entering the group’s building to protest perceived insults by the network against Iraq’s most revered Shi’ite cleric, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported Sunday.

The controversy started last week when the Egyptian host of an Al-Jazeera talk show, Ahmed Mansour, questioned Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s leadership credentials and whether he authored his own religious edicts.

Hoyer Meets Official From Egypt’s Banned Muslim Brotherhood

Via FoxNews House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer met with the Muslim Brotherhood’s parliament leader, Mohammed Saad el-Katatni, twice on Thursday — once at the parliament building and then at the home of the U.S. ambassador to Egypt, said Brotherhood spokesman Hamdi Hassan.

U.S. Embassy spokesman John Berry would only confirm that Hoyer, who represents Maryland, met with el-Katatni at U.S. Ambassador Francis Ricciardone’s home at a reception with other politicians and parliament members.

Though officially banned since 1954, the Brotherhood is tolerated by the government and has become Egypt’s largest opposition group and President Hosni Mubarak’s most powerful rival.

Its members, who run as independents, make up the largest opposition bloc in parliament, holding about one-fifth of its 454 seats.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has refused in the past to meet with the Muslim Brotherhood.

“Finish The Job” By Miles Gray

By Miles Gray – I have been against the action in Iraq from day one. However, now that we have created a mess in that country, it is our responsibility to solve the problems we created.

If we don’t, then the haven for terrorists ( that didn’t exist before) will come into being.

While it is not likely that the religious factions will ever unify, one or the other will become dominant. Whether that faction be friendly to us is yet to be seen.

Tiny Earp should understand that the God of Islam is the same God we worship!

The Jews often seem anxious to prove that Christ was only a good man nothing else. At least Islam recognizes Christ as a prophet of God and that Mohammed is the lastest prophet of God and the one to now be followed.

As for John Q. Adams,any man who has fought for this country understands exactly what his words mean. Maybe its time to shake up Washington and congress.
