Call for suicide attacks issued at Pakistani mosque

ISLAMABAD – Radical Islamists inside a mosque surrounded by Pakistani security forces issued a call over a loudspeaker on Tuesday for their followers to begin suicide bomb attacks.

Gunfire had erupted earlier following clashes between paramilitary troops and students at Lal Masjid, or Red Mosque, in the capital Islamabad. One trooper was killed and two students died later from wounds.

“We had asked to stop the firing 10 minutes ago, but as the firing continues we are calling for suicide attacks,” said the message broadcast from inside the mosque’s compound.

FBI’s Mueller: Bin Laden Wants to Strike U.S. Cities With Nuclear Weapons

Osama bin Laden and his terrorist group desperately want to obtain nuclear devices and explode them in American cities, especially New York and Washington, D.C., FBI Director Robert S. Mueller III tells Newsmax.In an exclusive interview, Mueller also acknowledged that bin Laden is still active, though isolated. The director revealed that the Bureau believes the terrorist leader continues to communicate with al-Qaida cells, some of which remain in the U.S.

Mueller declined to say how often bin Laden communicates or to elaborate on the substance of his communications.

Other intelligence sources tell Newsmax that U.S. security efforts have forced bin Laden to return to “horse-and-buggy days” — avoiding electronic communications in favor of using trusted couriers.

But Mueller says though hemmed in, al-Qaida’s paramount goal is clear: to detonate a nuclear device that would kill hundreds of thousands of Americans.

In contrast to homegrown terrorists, al-Qaida is far more likely to be able to pull off such an attack.

Mueller admits the nuclear threat is so real he sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night worrying about that possibility.

“I think it would be very difficult to wipe out the United States, but you’d have hundreds of thousands of casualties from a nuclear device, depending on the size of that nuclear device,” Mueller tells Newsmax.

Taliban Chief’s Death a Big U.S. Victory

KABUL, Afghanistan – The killing of the top Taliban commander Mullah Dadullah, a one-legged fighter who orchestrated suicide attacks, beheadings and an ethnic massacre, marks a major victory for the U.S. campaign at a time of flagging Afghan support over civilian killings.

As victims of Dadullah’s brutality celebrated his death Sunday, analysts called the killing the most significant Taliban loss since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. But even NATO acknowledged that Dadullah, who directed some of the Taliban’s most notorious violence, would soon be replaced.

Dadullah, a top lieutenant of Taliban leader Mullah Omar, was killed in the southern province of Helmand during a U.S.-led operation that also involved NATO and Afghan troops, NATO’s International Security Assistance Force said.

U.S., Germans Fear Imminent Terror Attack

U.S. and German officials fear terrorists are in the advanced planning stages of an attack on U.S. military personnel or tourists in Germany.

Law enforcement officials tell the Blotter on ABCNews.com that U.S. air marshals have been diverted to provide expanded protection of flights between Germany and the United States.

“The information behind the threat is very real,” a senior U.S. official told ABC News.

Iran restricts Al-Jazeera network

Iran’s parliament has banned Al-Jazeera television reporters from entering the group’s building to protest perceived insults by the network against Iraq’s most revered Shi’ite cleric, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported Sunday.

The controversy started last week when the Egyptian host of an Al-Jazeera talk show, Ahmed Mansour, questioned Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani’s leadership credentials and whether he authored his own religious edicts.

Al-Sadr calls for attacks on U.S. troops

“Al-Sadr calls for attacks on U.S. troops,” by Saad Abdul Kadir for Associated Press:

BAGHDAD – The renegade cleric Muqtada al-Sadr urged the Iraqi army and police to stop cooperating with the United States and told his guerrilla fighters to concentrate on pushing American forces out of the country, according to a statement issued Sunday.

The statement, stamped with al-Sadr’s official seal, was distributed in the Shiite holy city of Najaf on Sunday — a day before a large demonstration there, called for by al-Sadr, to mark the fourth anniversary of the fall of Baghdad.

“You, the Iraqi army and police forces, don’t walk alongside the occupiers, because they are your archenemy,” the statement said. Its authenticity could not be verified.

In the statement, al-Sadr — who commands an enormous following among Iraq’s majority Shiites and has close allies in the Shiite-dominated government — also encouraged his followers to attack only American forces, not fellow Iraqis.

“God has ordered you to be patient in front of your enemy, and unify your efforts against them — not against the sons of Iraq,” the statement said, in an apparent reference to clashes between al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army fighters and Iraqi troops in Diwaniyah, south of Baghdad. “You have to protect and build Iraq.”
