The AJC on Fred Thompson…

Cross Posted from ihavewebfeet

I normally steer clear of the Atlanta Journal/Constitution; a liberal rag floating around and dirtying up the beautiful sea of a mostly conservative south, really. However, I needed something to wrap glasses and plates while I was packing.
On the front page was this article about Fred Thompson and whether the airtime he get from his role on “Law and Order” gives him an unfair advantage over other candidates (should he decide to run).
Now, there is that ‘equal opportunity provision — or “equal time” — of the Federal Communications Act, which requires TV stations and cable systems that originate their own programming to offer the same amount of time to candidates running for the same office’. When Arnold Schwarzenegger ran for Governor, many channels voluntarily pulled his movies. I’m sure someone would have made a stink somewhere had they not done so.
L&O is one of TNT’s best running shows (actually, one of the longest-running drama series in the history of television, sometimes airing dozens of times a week). Over 100 of the episodes have Fred Thompson, so the question that will inevitably come up is, “will they voluntarily pull THAT many episodes of one of its most popular shows if they don’t have to” or will they wait until other candidates start making a fuss?

Let’s see…TNT = Turner Network Television, which is a part of Turner Broadcasting System (A Time Warner Company).
Who IS the Turner in Turner Broadcasting? Why, it’s none other than our very own ‘Mouth of The South’: Ted Turner. I believe we all know that Ol’ Teddy’s a tad bit on the liberal side, don’t we? Wouldn’t want anything unfair getting in the way of his Democratic candidate of choice, now would he (would The Hildabeast being the former first lady give her any kind of unfair advantage)?

My guess is, and I may very well be incorrect, that TNT will pull those puppies as soon as Senator Thompson announces he is a candidate.

OOO…maybe we should start an internet pool.

Fred Thompson wows GOP in S.C.

Chron.com

COLUMBIA, S.C. — After watching from offstage and seeing his poll numbers soar, actor and former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson on Wednesday made his first public appearance in a state that could help him star in a new role, as a presidential candidate.

The former Tennessee senator, 64, and a star of TV’s Law & Order, spoke to more than 300 South Carolina Republicans at a Columbia hotel. Invoking Ronald Reagan and what he called his party’s “underlying principles,” he gave many what they came for.

“He really galvanized the room,” said David Woodard, a Clemson University political scientist who attended the event. “It was clear they were looking for somebody else” than the current crop of candidates “and they were attracted to him.”

“He hit every one of the points that conservatives want to hear,” said York County Republican Park Gillespie. “He’s speaking to the base, no doubt about it.”

Thompson, accompanied by his wife, Jeri, and their 2½-year-old daughter, Hayden, worked the room at the luncheon, where he got a warm reception. :::More:::

Democrats spooked by rise of ‘new Reagan’

Telegraph.co.uk The Democratic party is so alarmed by the prospect of competing against Fred Thompson, a Republican who portrays himself as a successor to Ronald Reagan, that it is advising campaigners how to attack the former actor and Tennessee senator.

Mr Thompson is not expected to announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination until next month, but Democratic strategists fear the combination of his conservatism, southern charm and populist style could make him a hard man to beat in 2008. Some polls have already placed him in the top two Republicans, underlining the weakness of his rivals. ::::More::::

What’s So Special About Fred?

Here is an awesome youtube video. It is all audio so sit back and enjoy.

Many political observants on the conservative side are wondering why Fred Thompson is receiving the support he is next to Mit, Rudy and Newt. “What’s so special about Fred Thompson?”, they ask. But the answer is as plain as the nose on their faces. Conservatives have been voting AGAINST liberalism for the past 20 years but not since Reagan have they actually voted FOR conservatism. In the wake of Newt, Mit & Rudy, Fred sticks out like a sore thumb!

Thompson Announcement Set For Nashville

A source close to the campaign planning tells WSMV that that Thompson planned to announce his candidacy on the steps of the historic Fall School Building Tuesday, but Thompson campaign officials deny that Tuesday’s announcement is an official run for the White House. The source tells WSMV report says that the Thompson campaign has obtained the lease for that building to turn it into a national campaign office.”Everything’s in place for Tuesday,” the source told WSMV. “There are three major events built around his announcement.” But Bob Davis, the Tennessee Republican Party Chairman, and Thompson’s former Chief of Staff says “There will not be an annoucement Tuesday.”The Fall School is Nashville’s oldest still-standing school building. It currently houses office space, including a local office for U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander.
